South Marmara Development Agency, Enerjisa Üretim, Eti Maden, TÜBİTAK MAM, and ASPİLSAN Enerji got together and signed the corporate collaboration protocol at the event for the "Green Hydrogen Plant" scheduled to be built in Bandırma, Balkesir.
At Enerjisa Üretim's Bandırma Energy Base, work on producing and using green hydrogen, an alternative energy source with the greatest potential to replace fossil fuels in lowering carbon emissions using existing technology to accomplish 100 percent energy conversion, has begun.
The ceremony was also attended by Deputy Minister of Industry and Technology Dr. Çetin Ali Dönmez, Enerjisa Production CEO İhsan Erbil Bayçöl, Eti Maden General Manager Serkan Keleşer, South Marmara Development Agency Secretary General Abdullah Güç, TÜBTAK Vice President / MAM President V. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Yozgatlıgil, and ASPİLSAN Enerji General Manager Ferhat Özsoy.
The South Marmara will become a center for hydrogen production
Mehmet Volkan Duman, the Energy Manager of the South Marmara Development Agency, gave the opening remarks. In his presentation, Duman discussed hybrid systems and Turkey's energy transformation process, as well as the possibility of new energy systems that will be the first in our country. Duman also discussed the Southern Marmara Region's renewable energy advantages, stating that the major goal is to establish a "Hydrogen Production Center" on the Bandırma-Biga line.
Duman stated in his presentation that the Southern Marmara Region is the best place to try to resuscitate the hydrogen economy. South Marmara is chosen as the green hydrogen production hub due to its production of 12.50 percent of Turkey's power, hosting Turkey's most efficient renewable energy plants with a renewable source-based electricity installed capacity of 2.50 GW, and wind energy installed capacity. He emphasized that Turkey's leadership is successful, and that it has been identified as one of the most appealing places in the offshore RES studies conducted jointly by the Danish Energy Agency and the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources.
At the ceremony, Enerjisa Production Process Monitoring and R&D Assistant Manager Kahraman Oban, ASPİLSAN Enerji Istanbul R&D Manager Dr. Emre Ata, TÜBİTAK MAM Senior Chief Researcher Assoc. Dr. Fehmi Akgün, and Head of Eti Maden Technology Development Department Derya Maraşloğlu presented their hydrogen studies, renewable energy projects, related investments, and general introductions.
“Turkey will be able to create added value if it is a pioneer in this sense and moves forward”
Following the presentations, the protocol speeches began. Enerjisa Production CEO İhsan Erbil Bayçöl gave a speech in which he expressed his gratitude to the participating organizations and expressed his pleasure to host. Bayçöl noted that Turkey has significant hydrogen potential and that Turkey should be a leader in this area by acting swiftly. Bayçöl remarked that the process after the protocol's signature is extremely valuable, and that Enerjisa Üretim would like to participate fully in the themes that are being addressed in this protocol. Turkey can add value by being a pioneer in this area and taking concrete steps; the faster the road can be traveled, the more successful it will be; that these journeys are difficult on their own; and that only a point can be reached by joining forces; he concluded his speech by stating that Enerjisa Üretim wants to participate in this project voluntarily with all of its resources and heart.

"It is really crucial for us to be in the protocol," ASPİLSAN Enerji General Manager Ferhat Özsoy stated in his speeches, referring to the excellent news of domestic lithium battery production in May. The fact that Turkish businesses have taken the initiative in this way is the primary motivator. While global breakthroughs in hydrogen continue, Turkey must accelerate its efforts in this area. "The leadership of the South Marmara Development Agency in this respect, bringing us together and mobilizing all the possibilities of our organizations in this regard," he said at the end of his address.

“Boron has great advantages in hydrogen”
In his speech, Eti Maden Operations General Manager Serkan Keleşer stated that they sell pipes processed in 33 facilities under Eti Maden's management, adding value to the world, and that "we will complete a chain by putting the boron carbide facility into operation in 2022 with a new added value," and that "we will complete a chain by putting the boron carbide facility into operation in 2022 with a new added value." The cost of a ton of ore is $150, whereas the cost of a ton of boric acid is $600-700. We'll generate boron carbide powder from boric acid in our facilities by adding a new added value to boron, and using this powder, which costs $30k per tonne, we'll make armour worth $400k per ton. This country will house all of the chain's links. "Ferro boron" is our second project. This year, we'll establish the groundwork in Bandırma. Again, we will create the groundwork for our manufacturing facilities with the help of our buddies in order to extract the lithium from the ore. Lithium is obtained from liquid waste. This year, we will begin investing in the manufacturing of "sodium borohydride," to which we place a high value. Investments in boron-related end products will reach a peak in 2022. Boron also has a lot of advantages in hydrogen, therefore we'll be concentrating on making solid boron-hydrogen compounds with a lot of added value. Eti Maden will assist to the growth of this collaboration by providing its best support in this regard."

As a development agency, we are aware of our Region's potential as an institution working under the direction of our Ministry of Industry and Technology, and we are constantly attempting to assess it by publicizing it. At this moment, we are able to talk about this business more concretely, with the benefits of technology and tremendous development in our businesses' R&D research. The Ministry's perspective is to support concrete and reasonable projects as much as possible, and it is also possible to mobilize the Ministry's resources so that studies to be conducted in areas where a common vision has been determined by our organizations, such as "Bandırma Energy Base," will benefit Turkish SMEs, academia, and entrepreneurs.
